Gawker is reporting that Japanese-born New York-based artist Takeshi Miyakawa was arrested in Willaimsburg, Brooklyn early Saturday morning, after an installation he hung from a tree was mistaken for a bomb.

What was intended to be a loving homage to the city turned into an apparent bomb threat after 911 was called. The artist was putting up illuminated plastic ‘I [heart] NY’ bags around the neighborhood in honor of New York Design Week when a concerned neighbor called 311 who then transferred him to 911 and a bomb squad showed up.

The bomb squad was called in to examine the suspicious light source, only to determine after two hours that the bag posed no real danger. The artist was spotted a short time later down the street setting up a similar contraction, and was taken into custody for planting “a false bomb or hazardous substance.”
